Job Description
Fire Protection Engineer, which resides in the SACOM Design Engineering Department, is responsible for maintaining fire protection design control and providing technical support.
Responsibilities include:
- Creating, checking, or otherwise preparing design documentation related to fire protection and other related systems. Design documentation includes:
- Statements of Work
- Construction Specifications
- Drawings
- Engineering Studies
- Life Cycle Cost Analysis
- Other Engineering Documents as Requested
- Estimating probable cost of construction for assigned design projects
- Assisting in the preparation and estimating of design project budgets and schedules and providing deliverables to the customer within said budgets and schedules.
- Peer reviewing design projects prepared by other engineers within the department.
- Maintain a regular work schedule
- Other duties as assigned.
- Minimum of five years of experience working as an FPE, must include cost estimates, drawings and specifications.
Basic Qualifications
- ABET accredited BS Degree in Fire Protection Engineering
- Equivalent combination of experience and education
- Possess intermediate level computer skills necessary for daily activities, including email, word processing, spreadsheets, simple graphics, fire dynamic simulation, and a working knowledge of computer aided drafting.
- Manage day-to-day contacts with internal and external clients utilizing experience and technology to meet expectations.
- Perform research and document for internal and external distribution.
- Experience in designing Fire Detection Systems, Voice Evacuation and Mass Notification.
- Experience in designing fire sprinkler systems, Clean Agent Fire Suppression Systems and Deluge Systems.
- Experience in Plans Review for compliance with the Life Safety Code.
- Working Knowledge of the International Building Code, Fire Code, Mechanical Code and Plumbing Code and NFPA Codes and Standards.
- Must have knowledge of how to work around asbestos and Lead-based Paint.
- Effectively communicate, both written and verbal, including oral presentations.
- Must be a U.S. citizen and be able to obtain required NASA badge.
- Knowledge working with fire pumps
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Working knowledge of the Life Safety Code. NFPA 101
- Experience in designing Fire Detection Systems, Voice Evacuation and Mass Notification.
- NFPA 72.
- Experience in designing fire sprinkler systems to NFPA 13.
- Experience in designing Clean Agent Fire Suppression Systems NFPA 2001
- Experience in designing Deluge Systems. NFPA 15
- Knowledge working with fire pumps. NFPA 20
- Working Knowledge of the NFPA Codes and Standards, 10, 25, 33, …etc.
- Must have an ABET accredited BS Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or BS Engineering Degree and a PE in Fire Protection Engineering.
- Fire Safety Design knowledge to include cost estimates, drawings and specifications.
Desired skills
- Technical skills include, but not limited to: automatic suppression system design; fire detection, alarm and communication system design; code analysis; egress analysis; fire resistant construction analysis; smoke control analysis; as well as general fire protection and life safety concepts and research.
- Effectively interface with customers, engineers, drafters, Supervisors, and Management to complete projects and tasks on time and on budget to meet the business objectives.
- Ability to seek out customer's needs and prioritize own work and the work of the team accordingly.
- Experience managing multi-discipline /projects from design through construction and activation.
- Experience in working in Hazard Rated Areas, Class I, Division II, and Group D. NFPA 70 (NEC)
- Working Knowledge of the International Building Code, Fire Code, Mechanical Code and Plumbing Code.
- Must have a minimum of 5 years’ experience working as an FPE,
- Member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, grade Professional

Essential Functions UNUSUAL OR SPECIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION
- Position involves extended periods of sitting or standing. Physical requirements: sitting, walking, standing, extensive use of stairs, and access to remote structures. Typically required to lift and hold up to 50 pounds.
- Position is located on a hazardous testing facility, may be required to wear breathing protection (respirator), hearing protection, eye protection and other associated personal protective equipment.
- Primary work efforts located at Michoud Assembly Facility, LA. Occasional support to Stennis Space Center, MS active projects required. Telework work opportunities available per company policy.
