Purpose of the Position

  • Develops policies and programs for environmental operations. Manages and coordinates activities and responsibilities of environmental staff and ensures contract/regulatory requirements are met.

Principal Duties/Responsibilities of the Position

  • This position requires Leadership in environmental compliance and program management for all environmental media and programs at Stennis Space Center:
  • Air Emissions, Solid Waste, Hazardous Waste, Wastewater, Storm Water, SPCC, Tanks, Pollution Prevention, Remediation Programs, NEPA, Environmental Resources, facility design/construction, and Task Order/Service Request Management. 
  • Plans and manages environmental programs and the respective department. Establishes program objectives, policies, and priorities; ensures they meet appropriate guidelines and regulations.
  • Manages and supports customer in the performance of self-evaluations and external/internal audits. Ensures appropriate data are gathered, analyses are conducted, and recommendations provided. Communicates recommendations to customer.
  • Manages, develops, and provides environmental training classes. Ensures courses provide appropriate information and meet customer needs.
  • Manages, supports, and responds to employee/building occupant environmental issues and concerns. Ensures activities are documented and establishes procedures for documenting the information.
  • Develops plans, procedures, reports, and other required technical documentation necessary for environmental program operations. Oversees compilation and submission of required reports. Monitors the submission of required reports to ensure timeliness, accuracy, and appropriateness; ensures revisions are provided as needed.
  • Conducts audits, surveys, inspections, and other activities as available. Evaluates site control programs for environmental hazards and initiates requirements for hazard abatement.
  • Reviews technical documentation (e.g., process plans, design packages, SWRs, etc.) for compliance with applicable requirements.
  • Establishes procedures and processes and implements same.
  • Selects and hires employees. Trains and evaluates employees to enhance their performance, development, and work product. Addresses performance issues and makes recommendations for personnel actions.
  • Monitors spending for adherence to budget, recommends variances as necessary.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, environment science, environmental engineering, or related field preferred
  • Ten or more years of environmental compliance experience
  • Five or more years of environmental management
  • Experience working with federal, state, and local environmental regulations
  • Experience working with budget and project management techniques
  • Experience working with the permit and permit modification processes
  • Experience working with waste management and minimization techniques and environmental best management practices
  • Experience working with the development of in-depth and original responses to complicated and unpredictable problems and situations.

Other Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen in order to obtain required NASA badge.
  • Must be able to provide a certified Birth Certificate (with state seal), Passport, or INS Citizenship documents on date of hire (candidate will be sent home if this paperwork is not provided upon arrival on date of hire).
  • Must have the ability to communicate the English language, both verbally and written, in an effective manner.
  • Must have, and maintain, a valid driver’s license.

Physical Requirements

Preferences

·       Prior knowledge of NASA site, experienced with working on government installations preferred.
