Position Description:

Function of position:  Lays out, installs, maintains, and repairs refrigeration machinery, auxiliary equipment and piping including such items as compressors, pumps, condensers and to motors in place.  Adjusts and regulates all valves, controls, thermocouples and thermostats to balance the system.  Examines refrigeration machinery, auxiliary equipment, mechanical, electrical and pneumatic controls, and piping while in operation to detect obvious defects and or malfunctions.  Instructs lower graded employees who assist incumbent in the performance of their duties.

Representative duties and responsibilities: Overhauls and rebuilds refrigeration equipment as required; disassembles various parts such as valves, springs, and connections to examine and note their condition; installs new piping, packing, couplings, valves, etc. to stop leaks.  Loads refrigeration mediums such as Freon and ammonia into refrigeration system as necessary.  Perform sheet metal work associated with air conditioning duct systems.  Analyzes major equipment breakdowns and determines best method to correct the malfunctions; performs alignment and operational checks necessary to eliminate all mechanical or electrical failures.  Replaces mechanical parts as required and makes electrical repairs such as replacing fuses and heat elements, adjusting and/or replacing control units and thermostats and items of similar complexity.  Operates “built up type” air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment by performing all major steps necessary to start equipment initially or after a shut down, periodically observing all components of the system in operation and making the critical adjustments for temperatures, pressures, air velocity, etc.

Job Requirement

• Heating, Vent & AC Mechanic    
• Minimum of up to 5 years of experience. Requires ability to read and interpret complicated maintenance refrigeration blueprints, sketches, and specifications; uses advanced shop mathematics and a variety of precision test equipment measuring instruments.
• An EPA approved CFC Universal Certification Card is required by the EPA 40 CFR 82 Subpart F

Essential Functions

UNUSUAL OR SPECIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION 

Moderate physical effort required to for sustained periods in handling light, and medium weight parts. Requires intermittent activity, in awkward positions, and climbing about equipment.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK ENVIRONMENT

Working conditions vary with exposure to grease, oil, dirt, vibration, heat, cold, etc.

EQUIPMENT AND MACHINES INVOLVED IN WORK TASKS

Must have a basic knowledge of the mechanics of refrigeration; be able to read fairly complicated drawings, sketches and specifications; and use a variety of hand tools and test equipment.

CRITICALITY OF ATTENDANCE

Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical.   Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.

Must be able to work in a team atmosphere.  Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation.  Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others. 

Must be able to obtain and maintain appropriate certifications where such certifications are a requirement of the job.  For jobs requiring operation of motor vehicles, must maintain a valid driver’s license.
