Summer Intern

Syncom Space Services has operations at NASA Michoud Assembly Facility, LA. is seeking an Environmental Science and Engineering student for a temporary summer internship.

Position Summary

Reporting directly to the Environmental Science and Engineering Manager, this is a temporary position providing on the job training. Duties provide meaningful work experience and business knowledge to college students in their chosen field.

 Purpose of the Position

  • Support management of Solid Waste disposal program
  • Assist in the management and upgrade of MAF Safety Data Sheet Management
  • Assist is data collection and air emissions calculations to support compliance reports for facility air permits.
  • Assist in performing inspections to ensure compliance with Hazardous Waste Storage and disposal requirements.
  • Assist in developing waste minimization and waste diversion/recycling efforts.
  • Support environmental compliance with regulatory requirements and MAF related to water system management and tank programs
  • Principal Duties/Responsibilities of the Position
  • Support the preparation of permit applications in accordance with the State of Louisiana
  • Facility storm water management and construction project stormwater compliance
  • Provide support to the Environmental staff for the MAF SPCC Plan in coordination with 40 CFR 112 and company policy/programs
  • Support troubleshooting of wastewater operations
  • Perform and document various inspections
  • Supporting engineering design and construction projects
  • Conduct/support various audits and inspections and implement corrective action as necessary to ensure compliance
  • Develops plans, procedures, reports, and other required technical documentation necessary for environmental program operations
  • All other duties as assigned

 Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled as a Junior or Senior in a Environmental Science or Engineering curriculum having already taken at least 1-2 applicable courses is required
  • Must be in good academic standing and have completed at least Junior level
  • Have demonstrated a very strong aptitude in major field
  • Environmental compliance experience a plus
  • Experience with MS Office  with strong, MS Excel and Word experience 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills is required
  • Attention to detail and the ability to exercise good professional judgment is required
  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels of management regarding project activity is required
  • Must be able to provide own transportation and be able to travel to Michoud Assembly Facility in eastern New Orleans.
  • Must be able to exhibit confidentiality due to sensitive nature of data available
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen in order to obtain required NASA badge.
  • Must be able to provide a certified Birth Certificate (with state seal), Passport, or INS Citizenship documents on date of hire. (Candidate will be sent home is this paperwork is not provided upon arrival on date of hire.)
  • Must have the ability to communicate the English language, both verbally and written, in an effective manner.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

Special Knowledge and Skills Preferred

  • Knowledge of the federal, state (Louisiana), and local environmental regulations  a plus
  • 40-Hour HAZWOPER current certification a plus
  • Water or Wastewater Operator Certification a plus

Physical Requirements

  • Lift minimum of 30 pound load up from the ground frequently
  • Walk six hours per day
  • Walk up/down stairs frequently
  • Climb ladders and scaffolding
  • Wear PPE gear periodically (steel toe shoes, safety glasses, hard hat, gloves) • Tolerate extreme cold/heat for three hours continuously
